Jax Vineyards is located in the northernmost part of Napa Valley, an area called Calistoga. This family-owned vineyard produces two separate lines of wine – the Jax Vineyards label and the Y3 series.

Jax Vineyards

The Jax Vineyards label came first, with the first production released in 1996 when brother and sister, Trent and Kimberly Jackson, along with their father, founded the winery. At the time, they wanted to branch out and do something a little bit different than other California producers. They wanted to create wines with a real sense of place by concentrating on the unique terroir of their vineyards.

“Change comes first at a small scale driven by the smaller more nimble producers.”

Thanks to the vineyards’ close proximity to Mt. St. Helena, they are made up of distinct volcanic alluvial soil. This particular type of soil serves the vines well, as it helps promote excellent water absorption. Additionally, the vineyards’ location boasts extreme diurnal temperature variations. This means that during the day, the vineyards enjoy intense heat, giving the fruit a deep color and strong complexity. When night falls, the temperatures take a big drop and the chilly air causes the fruit to develop acidity and structure.

In 2013, Jax Vineyards brought on a new proprietor to act as CEO, Dan Parrott. Parrott brought with him an extensive knowledge of Old World wine after previously working with a number of different producers from Portugal, Spain, and Italy. This element of refinement he brought with him helped Jax Vineyards emphasize the balanced qualities of their wines, allowing them to stand out from the other big, bold, and in-your-face California wine producers.

Jax Vineyards takes great pride in its namesake line and by remaining a family-owned single-estate production, it is free to operate its vineyards exactly how they see fit. Besides following strict sustainable farming practices, the Jax team is able to pinpoint exactly when they want to harvest for the best resulting fruit and then use it to create whatever styles of wine they desire. This approach is how Jax Vineyards was able to still produce fantastic wines during years with rough weather conditions, including the notorious fire years of 2017 and 2020.

Jax Vineyards’ second line of wines, the Y3 series, was conceived to be a scalable production showcasing wines from numerous AVAs throughout Napa and Sonoma. Jax Vineyards partners with other small growers who share the same values as them around these two wine regions and creates “true to varietal” wines in a variety of styles and price points. The Y3 name comes from the Jacksons’ grandparents’ cattle farm, where “Y3” was used as their cattle symbol.
