Craft-driven tequila brand Calle 23 releases its much-anticipated Criollo El Dos!
Calle 23, located in the highlands of Jalisco, was founded by Sophie Decobecq, a French biochemist and engineer. Work propelled Decobecq to move to Mexico, and it was here she began studying yeasts and lactic bacteria in tequila production. Before founding her own brand, she spent time working alongside Carlos Camarena at Tequila Ocho, coordinating blending, bottling, aging, and logistics.
Since its inception in 2003, Calle 23 has centered its production on craftsmanship and authenticity, celebrating traditional tequila making and highlighting the natural flavors of Blue Weber agave rather than obscuring it with heavy oak influences or additives. To celebrate the birth of her first son, Decobecq produced a limited release of a new, experimental expression – Criollo Blanc. The tequila was met with high acclaim, and enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting her follow-up to this release. After eight years in the making, Criollo El Dos is finally here!
Criollo El Dos
Similar to its predecessor, Criollo El Dos was produced by Decobecq to celebrate the birth of her second son, Eliès. It is produced using only the rare Blue Weber agave variant, Criollo. These agave plants tend to grow smaller than other varieties and contain a high sugar content.
The tequila was initially aged for nine months in used oak barrels before Decobecq had it moved to stainless steel tanks for further aging. A portion of the batch was then further aged to extra añejo intensity. The final product is a blend of primarily añejo and extra añejo tequila with a touch of reposado. Because of tequila regulations, it must be labeled based on the youngest age of the blend, which is why this tequila is considered a reposado despite the majority of the blend being añejo.
Only a small number of bottles of this limited-edition tequila will be available. For details on ordering, please contact your Vintegrity representative or send the team a message online.
